Perhaps you have dreamed about starting a business of your own for years and the time is finally right to get it off the ground.

However, you worry about making mistakes. Here are five tips to help you launch your startup successfully.

1. Develop your marketing strategy

Many new business owners are so excited about getting the company up and running that they ignore developing a marketing strategy. You may be depending on help from friends and family, but you need to market yourself and your new business with ads, a website and a social media presence at the very least.

2. Take care about underpricing and overspending

Take some time to think about how you are spending your money. Develop a startup budget and stick to it. On the other hand, avoid underpricing your products or services. Keep competitors’ costs in mind and use them as a guide.

3. Embrace written agreements

From employment contracts to confidentiality agreements, seek legal help in writing and reviewing the contracts and agreements you need as a new entity.

4. Protect intellectual property

It is essential to protect your intellectual property (IP) from the very beginning. Whether it involves a logo, name, photos or some other IP item, you can rely on legal guidance to help you register and protect it.

5. Avoid short-term thinking

New business owners often make the mistake of focusing exclusively on the short term. Keep your business moving by giving serious thought to long-term goals. Where do you want the company to be in one year? Five? Consider your financial picture, personnel, services or products and plan accordingly. Remember to ask for help from your attorney and other professionals to ensure that you are taking your business in the right direction.
