The symptoms of traumatic brain injury

On Behalf of | Aug 16, 2018 | Personal Injury Law

Many Pittsburgh-area residents who are injured as a result of the negligence of another are fortunate enough to escape with relatively minor injuries. These injuries may include scrapes, bruises or cuts. More moderate accidents leave victims suffering from broken bones and gashes that may require stitches. Although these injuries can be painful and take some time to recover from, they are not as serious as some of the most severe injuries, such as a traumatic brain injury.

No matter the type, traumatic brain injuries are serious. However, they do fall on a spectrum of severity. Minor traumatic brain injuries, for example, may present themselves through headaches, vomiting, fatigue, sleep trouble and dizziness. These types of injuries will usually also leave a victim with difficulty speaking, sensitivity to sound and light and mental issues such as loss of memory and/or concentration problems.

Moderate and severe traumatic brain injuries, on the other hand, can leave a victim with much more serious symptoms. He or she may be knocked unconscious for a significant period of time, be subjected to seizures and even leak clear fluid form the ears and nose. These individuals can also present with extreme confusion, slurred speech and other cognitive limitations. While these symptoms sound scary, they pale in comparison to some of the long-term effects imposed by serious traumatic brain injuries. Those who are subjected to this type of harm may be left in a vegetative state, paralyzed to a certain extent and suffer other physical and mental impairment that can last a lifetime.

Treating and attempting to recover from a traumatic brain injury can be painful both physically and emotionally. It can also be extremely costly, as medical expenses and rehabilitation costs can quickly skyrocket. This is why those who have suffered one of these injuries at the hand of another negligent individual should think about pursuing a personal injury lawsuit. If successful on one of these claims, compensation may be recoverable for damages suffered.
