Many separating parents in Pittsburgh have to struggle with the question of how much child support they feel they need, or how much they can afford to pay. The parties to a child support dispute are free to request an amount that they believe is fair, but to a great extent, a judge will use pre-determined criteria to set child support payments.
That being said, it is true that judges have some discretion to award more or less child support, within certain limits, so it is not uncommon for parents to try to maximize or minimize the amount of support in their requests to the court. As an example of going the extra mile to seek maximum child support, news outlets last week reported that supermodel Linda Evangelista recently requested a whopping $46,000 a month in child support for her four-year-old son.
The father, whose family wealth is estimated at around $11.5 billion, probably can afford to pay that much support, but it remains to be seen whether the judge in the case will be convinced by Evangelista’s arguments.
Pittsburgh child support attorneys noted from the news reports that the supermodel has said that the boy’s father, who is CEO of a company that owns luxury brands like Bottega Veneta, Yves St. Laurent and Gucci, has not paid any support during the boy’s lifetime. Evangelista wants the $46,000 a month to cover expenses such as round-the clock nannies and bodyguards.
The judge seemed preliminarily sympathetic to the need for nannies, and for protection for the offspring of a millionaire and a billionaire. He did rule out, however, Evangelista’s request for $7,500 a month for “vacation” expenses.
