Divorce is Bad – Don’t Make it Worse!

On Behalf of | Aug 24, 2013 | Divorce

Divorces are never easy and never “good” for either party. In fact, most divorces are just flat “bad”. So why make them worse? Of course, everyone wants the competitive advantage, whether fighting about splitting assets, child custody or child support; however, there are some things that you can do to lessen the harshness of the situation brought on by divorce.

First, do not get the “Rambo” lawyer. In 30 years of this practice, I can honestly say that the “warrior” lawyers that I have faced have done nothing more than to antagonize the other side, which lengthens the divorce proceedings and ultimately costs both clients more in legal fees. This is money that the Parties could be splitting between themselves. Instead, look for the respected, knowledgeable divorce attorney, which gives you a strategic detailed plan, who has a reputation of working hard and smart for their clients, that has resulted in proven success.

Second, as a divorcing spouse, do not do things just to make the other side mad.

I am not saying to acquiesce to the other sides every whim. No, instead, strategically chose your fights while understanding that compromise does not mean that you are weak.

That being said, if the other side is unreasonable, you may have no other choice, but to fight. Hopefully, your approach will allow reasonableness to flourish in the process.

Again, your most important choice is the kind of attorney you choose. It starts with doing your homework and asking the right questions.
