Details emerge of agreement in Mel Gibson child support case

Mel Gibson has been neck-deep in family law problems in the last year or two, but some of them appear to be reaching some resolution, at least for awhile. The Hollywood film star and award-winning director and producer has suffered some terrible setbacks to his public image, with the exposure of bigoted rants and of open conflict with his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. But Gibson and Grigorieva appear to have reached an agreement on the terms of child support and child custody for their daughter, who is not yet two years old.

Some of the settlement terms became public this week when a court approved the deal the two parents reached. Gibson has agreed to allow Grigorieva and the child live in a multimillion dollar house that he owns. When the daughter turns eighteen, the house is to be sold and the funds put in a trust for the daughter. He has also agreed to pay Grigorieva $750,000 in a lump sum for child support.

Pittsburgh child support attorneys have noted from news reports that the amount of support was said to be based on what Gibson provides to support his previous seven children.

Speaking of which, Gibson is also nearing finalization of his divorce with his wife Robyn. The two were married for almost 28 years, and had Gibson's first seven children together.

One unusual but perhaps not unexpected aspect of the Gibson-Grigorieva deal was that they both had to agree to stop making negative public statements about each other. They are expressly forbidden from releasing embarrassing recordings of each other. Since their breakup, both have released recordings of the other that were unflattering, to say the least. The judge agreed to this provision of their agreement.
